Ossau.app: an app to meet people and head into the mountains

06 Mar 2026

Lately I have been spending a lot of time in the Ossau Valley.
It is an incredible playground: hiking, climbing, trail running… You only have to step outside to find a summit, a trail or a valley to explore.

But there is one thing I notice often:
sometimes you want to go out… but not necessarily alone.

It can be for safety, motivation, or simply to share a good moment outside.

And that is exactly why I discovered Ossau.app.

An app born here, in the Pyrenees, that offers something very simple: organize outdoor outings and meet other mountain enthusiasts.

The problem we all know

If you practice mountain activities, you have probably already experienced this.

The weather is perfect, you have the day free, you have an outing idea. But nobody is available.

So you start sending a few messages:

  • WhatsApp
  • Messenger
  • Instagram
  • Facebook groups

And in the end… nothing.

Or you end up going alone.

There is nothing wrong with that, I also really like going out alone, but sometimes sharing an outing completely changes the experience.

That is exactly where Ossau.app comes in.

An app designed to organize outings

The principle is fairly simple.

On Ossau, you can suggest an outing or join someone else’s.

For example:

  • a hike
  • a trail run
  • a climbing outing
  • ski touring
  • a bike ride
  • or even just a walk

When someone creates an outing, they can add:

  • distance
  • elevation gain
  • level
  • GPX track
  • meeting point
  • recommended gear

In short, everything you need to know what you are getting into.

Then people can join the outing and chat directly in the app.

Simple. Clear. Effective.

A pretty cool community dimension

What I like about the idea behind Ossau is the local community side.

We are far from a big impersonal social network.

The app was born at the foot of the Pyrenees and is aimed first and foremost at people who practice mountain activities.

It is also a way to:

  • meet new people
  • discover places you do not know
  • go out more often
  • share a carpool

And, incidentally, avoid turning Facebook into a hiking partner search forum.

The mountains, but not alone

Personally, I really like solo outings.
That is often where I make my favorite photographs.

But some outings are much more enjoyable with others:

  • long hikes
  • climbing
  • ski touring
  • slightly committed outings

Not to mention safety. Having someone with you in the mountains changes everything. The idea of an app that simply connects people who want to go outside therefore feels fairly logical to me.

A simple app, and that is very good

What I find interesting with Ossau.app is that the app does not try to do everything.

It focuses on a few ideas:

  • organizing outings
  • meeting people
  • sharing the mountains

And that is already a lot.

It is the kind of tool that becomes especially interesting when the community grows.

And in a valley like ours, there is potential.

An app that makes sense here

The Ossau Valley is an incredible outdoor playground:

  • hiking
  • trail running
  • cycling
  • climbing
  • ski touring

You only have to look around to understand why so many people come here to practice mountain activities.

A local app that helps organize outings and meet other people who practice is ultimately quite coherent with the spirit of the place.

My opinion

I find the idea genuinely interesting.

Not because it is a technological revolution.

But because it answers a simple problem:
we want to go out… but we do not always know with whom.

If the app keeps growing and the community plays along, it could become a really nice tool to:

  • meet people
  • discover new routes
  • go out more often

And above all… fill the trails rather than Facebook threads.

The app is free and available on smartphone.

Who knows, maybe we will cross paths on an outing.
