Monbazillac: a vineyard rooted in its region helped me discover it. An unforgettable adventure in the heart of the area

18 May 2023

At first, Monbazillac was just a stopover.
In the end, it became a real little trip: wine, villages, beautiful roads and that South-West atmosphere I love so much.

I was welcomed with great kindness, a map in hand and a few simple tips: “take your time, look around, the region reveals itself slowly”.
It was exactly the right rhythm.

Welcome at Domaine de Cavaroque

The stay began at Domaine de Cavaroque.
A calm place, surrounded by vines, with that blend of simplicity and character often found in the region.

What I liked immediately:

  • the morning light on the rows of vines;
  • the almost empty secondary roads;
  • the feeling of naturally slowing down.

The bastide towns of Issigeac and Monpazier

I then headed toward the bastide towns of Issigeac and Monpazier.

A bastide is a type of medieval village from the South-West of France, built around a very structured plan: central square, regular streets, arcades, market halls.
Once there, it is mostly an atmosphere: blond stone, narrow lanes, lively squares, and a real sense of history.

Sarlat-la-Caneda Christmas market and the Cabanes du Breuil

Next stop: Sarlat-la-Caneda for the Christmas market.
Lots of people, lights everywhere, seasonal cooking smells, and a real festive atmosphere.

I also stopped by the Cabanes du Breuil, a place that tells another side of the local heritage.
I like that contrast between very lively villages and these quieter sites, almost outside time.

Beynac-et-Cazenac panorama and a night at La Ferme de Turnac

The panorama of Beynac-et-Cazenac remains one of my best memories from the stay.
From the heights, the valley opens completely, with the river winding between the hills.

The day ended at La Ferme de Turnac, in a simple and restful atmosphere, exactly what was needed after several hours of driving and walking.

Looking back on this stay in Dordogne

This trip to Monbazillac reminded me of one simple thing:
you do not need to go far to experience a real adventure.

Between heritage, landscapes and encounters, the region has everything you need to take your time and let yourself be surprised.
If you like calm roads, villages full of history and local countryside atmospheres, you can go there with your eyes closed.
