Discover Montignac, the town next to the Lascaux cave

During my trip to Dordogne, I had the chance to meet a woman from the region who advised me to visit the town of Montignac. She told me about its charming cobbled streets, small shops and picturesque cafes, which make it a must-see destination in the area. It was only after exploring the town that I realized the famous Lascaux cave was right next door! That is how I discovered one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the world. Montignac is therefore an essential stop when visiting the Lascaux cave, but it also deserves a visit in its own right for its charm and authenticity.

Dive into prehistoric art at Lascaux, an experience

During my visit to Lascaux IV, I had the chance to live a truly unique experience. Arriving late, at 6 p.m., out of season, I was surprised to find myself alone with my partner during the guided tour. We were able to fully enjoy this discovery of prehistoric art in complete intimacy. The guide was passionate and showed us the hidden treasures of the cave. The frescoes, engravings and cave paintings are breathtakingly beautiful and testify to prehistoric art in all its splendor. This visit was an enriching and unforgettable experience that I highly recommend.

It is impossible to make photos inside the cave itself; the panel room is there for that after the visit.

Although Lascaux IV is a replica of the real cave, the experience of diving into prehistoric art is truly stunning. The reproduction work is simply incredible! The colors and details of the frescoes and cave paintings are reproduced with great precision. If you do not look at the floor, you feel like you are in the real Lascaux cave. The sounds, lights and atmosphere are recreated so well that you feel transported back to the time of the discovery. It is a fascinating immersive experience that makes prehistoric art easy and enjoyable to understand.

The secrets of Lascaux: a fascinating journey into human prehistory

At the bottom of the cave shaft is a mysterious engraving representing a man with a bird’s head. This discovery opened the way to many theories about the beliefs and spiritual practices of prehistoric humans. However, the best-known part of the cave undoubtedly remains the magnificent fresco of the bulls, which testifies to the mastery of prehistoric art and the cultural richness of our ancestors. The secrets of Lascaux are many and continue to spark the curiosity and wonder of everyone who visits.

My final opinion

To summarize, I was lucky enough to discover the Lascaux cave during my last visit to Dordogne. Accompanied by a passionate and knowledgeable guide, I was transported into a beautiful journey. I was a little skeptical about visiting a reproduction of the cave, but the experience was simply wild. The frescoes and cave paintings are so well reproduced that you feel like you are in the real Lascaux cave. The colors, details and nuances are striking. In the end, I did not regret the 20 euros for the entrance ticket. This visit was a unique and unforgettable moment. It is something to do at least once. Go! I admit I talked about it to everyone for the next three weeks.
